4. Eat Healthy and Cultivate Diet Discipline
Eating healthy is simply what it says: eat only what will advance your good health. A lot of what we eat, ironically, adds to our health problems, including pushing up the blood pressure. A healthy diet is one that aims at food that is low in saturated fat, total fat, cholesterol and overall calorie intake. Trans fat is also considered unhealthy. Eating right is best archieved by shifting to a diet consisting more of vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, whole grains and fish, poultry and lean meat. You will also need other foods high in fibre and starch. Your meal portions just have to be moderated, too. Also, plenty of water is always recommended for good health. Distancing yourself from fried meals is one step forward, while frequenting fast foods outlets or indulging in much of canned or processed foods is a setback to avoid. Often, they are fatty, fried, over-salted and hardly healthy. Cultivate the discipline of limiting to meals that boost your overall health and vitality and limit the risk of high blood pressure and other health conditions.

It will also help to get familiar with the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) plan. DASH is an American thing, you may say, but it's based on careful research and is widely endorsed and applied. It provides detailed guides on eating, with the goal of lowering and controlling high blood pressure and has proven results to recommend it. Read more on DASH, here.

5. Trim Your Weight
Obesity or overweight will predispose you to many serious health threats and that includes hypertension. If your blood pressure is already high, excessive body weight will tend to further raise it up as your heart is constrained to do more work, raising your risk profile. To aim for a lower and controlled blood pressure, you should work down your body weight. Correlation of rising blood pressure and the size of the waistline has also been highlighted in some studies. Get the fat off as much as possible to reduce the burden on your already troubled heart. A combination of exercises and proper dieting will help in speeding up your weight reduction effort.

6. Avoid or at Least Reduce Alcohol Intake
While slight intake of alcohol may do no harm and could even be helpful, there is a danger of exceeding the "slight" limit. Much alcohol consumption has been implicated in inducing high blood pressure, just as it can reduce the effectiveness of medications taken. Besides, there are the other negative implications of alcohol consumption. For one, it could add a lot of calories. Quitting alcohol consumption should therefore be one of your steps to the control of your high blood pressure.

7. Quit Smoking, too
Smoking is also implicated in high blood pressure, in addition to its other negative health implications (example: the risk of lung cancer). The nicotine in tobacco raises the blood pressure for a significant length of time, after smoking. If you keep smoking all day, you invariably push your BP level higher than it would have been, for much of the day. Also, it is believed that tobacco has chemicals that can damage the arteries and cause the retention of fluid. More fluid body will raise your BP.

8. Be More Positive, Avoid Undue Stress
While there are many issues that could challenge you daily, keeping a positive orientation and avoiding undue stress with help you maintain a healthy blood pressure profile. Stress will cause a tightening of nerves and a higher risk of raised blood pressure.............

9. See Your Doctor as Scheduled
While you are encouraged to keep a blood pressure monitor at home and measure your blood pressure regularly, as well as make the various lifestyle choices that would help improve your blood pressure, the management of your elevated blood pressure should still be in the hands of your doctor. You should conscientiously keep your appointments as well as drawing attention to any issues relating to your health. The essence of monitoring your blood pressure is to watch for any adverse trends and any important observation should quickly be quickly brought to the attention of your doctor.

10. Take Prescribed Medication with Discipline
If your doctor has placed you on medication for high blood pressure, you can't afford to gloss over taking your drugs. While it may prove difficult to easily remember always, the seriousness of the health problem at stake should compel you to device ways to do so. Prescribed medication should be taken religiously, for good results. Let the doctor decide when there is need for alteration, if that has to be.

To put it together, high blood pressure is very damaging, if left to run riot. Considering that it is a chronic condition, you must resign to living with it. Yet, its potential damage can be substantially contained, if it is managed effectively and kept in check. Your aim should be to achieve a blood pressure level in the normal range, through a combination of the measures articulated here. Hopefully, you will achieve good results, which is wonderful for your health and life.
